Roblox Scripting: How to Make a Game Like the Pros on Roblox Studio
How To Script A Simulator Game On Roblox Script
Roblox is a free gaming platform that has taken the world by storm. In addition to a user base of over 60 million players and a state of the art game engine, one thing that we think makes Roblox really special is that its users make the games!
There are now hundreds of thousands of user generated games and an increasing number of amateur game designers who are learning Roblox scripting with Lua.
And to make matters even more interesting, Roblox has introduced a commercial component to their platform which allows game designers to make money selling their creations on Roblox marketplace, including many who have become millionaires.
Making Roblox games is fun and is a great way to learn about computer programming and game design. One thing that trips up some would be designers is learning how to code using Lua, the Roblox scripting language.
In this free tutorial, the CodaKid team will teach you how to make your own custom Obby course from the ground up using Roblox Studio and Lua. Learning the platform by taking a guided tutorial on a relatively simple game is an excellent way for beginners to learn Roblox Studio and its many facets.
Here is a quick trailer of CodaKid’s free Obby tutorial that is presented in the series of free instructional videos below. They are designed as a fun and effective way to teach coding for kids, but adults can take them too. Please let us know how you like them!
Part 1: Intro Trailer
For those of you that might prefer written instructions, the Roblox team has created an excellent Wiki that will walk you through the basics of creating your own Obby.
For those that gravitate towards video based instruction, please proceed! If you are interested in further Roblox coding and game development instruction, you can check out CodaKid’s online courses which teach you how to make dozens of Roblox games, including Tycoon games, Dodgeball games, Prop Hunts, Racing courses, Adventure Maps, and more.
CodaKid’s video tutorials on Roblox Game Development will give you step-by-step instructions on how to set up Roblox Studio, how to master its controls, how to lay out your Obby course , and finally how to make your Obby come to life with the Lua.
We hope that you’ll enjoy making a custom Obstacle course that you can play with your familoy and friends and that you’ll continue your Roblox Game Development journey (and maybe even net some Robux on your way!)
Just a heads up: CodaKid is a kids online coding academy and the courses we create are designed for kids and teens. Still, even adult learners have derived a ton of benefit from our classes. Just know that our (often goofy) humor is designed for the younger generation.
Part 2: Set up
In order to get started, you’ll need to set up a free Roblox account and install Roblox Studio. The video tutorial directly above above will go over these details, and also cover how to access the output console which will give you debug information.
While Roblox Studio may seem a bit intimidating at first, it is actually very user-friendly and you’ll become proficient in it in no time. Just follow the instructions in our video, step by step.
If you happen to be one of our international visitors – welcome! Students in over 80 countries have taken our award-winning online courses. If the English speaking goes too quickly, please remember that you can click on YouTube settings and slow down the speech. Or if you’d prefer to go faster, you can speed the videos up!

Part 3: Roblox Studio Basics
Roblox Studio provides users with an array of powerful game creation tools. But before we are able to create a massive hit in Roblox marketplace, we will need to start with the basics.
In the tutorial above the CodaKid team will go over how to shape the objects and parts that will allow you to produce incredible visual environments. We will begin with commands such as Move, Scale, Rotate, and you will quickly become a pro at moving around the Roblox Editor.
We highly suggest that you take your time here. There are many navigation buttons and menus that you’ll need to master, and you’ll want a solid foundation before you move on to the next tutorial. In addition, if you’d like some additional instruction on the basics, you might also visit the excellent Roblox Wiki.
Part 4: Digging Deeper with Roblox Studio
In this video tutorial, we will go into even more depth on how to make your world colorful, visually interesting, and unique. You will become proficient at building different shaped parts, learn how to make parts transparent, and learn how to apply different materials and properties to your Roblox level.
You will also learn how to bolt down your Obby obstacles in place so that you can start creating your first awesome game.
Part 5: Basic Lua Scripting
How To Make A Simulator Game On Roblox No Scripts
In this secti0n of your Obby series, you will get to the heart of what we teach at CodaKid – Lua scripting!
Lua is a powerful and elegant scripting language that is behind all of the awesome games that you play on the Roblox platform, and after this tutorial you will gain some important skills that will help you on your way to becoming a Roblox game designer.
One thing that we love about Roblox is that it has a native, user-friendly text editor that makes coding easy to learn.
In this video tutorial, we will use Lua scripting to manipulate spawn location, kill blocks, and game objects. We also give an overview of Lua functions and how these can be used to connect functions to scripting events.
We encourage you to spend time watching our special breakout video, which is designed to teach a coding concept called a function. Functions are used in nearly every coding language on planet earth and mastering this important concept will help you become more proficient as a designer/developer.
While scripting using text-based coding might seem intimidating at first, just take it slow and we think you’ll find it is much simpler than you expect it will be. Lua is a great first language for computer programming students.
If you keep working at it, we think that you’ll find that Lua scripting is fun and rewarding, and that you’ll be ready to build more complex things in a short period of time.
If you are interested in learning how to make other games on Roblox, we encourage you to check out CodaKid and we’ll show you how to make Dodgeball games, Tycoon Games, Prop Hunts, Racing Games, Adventure Games, and more!
All CodaKid courses include messaging and screen share support from a team of friendly teachers which can be really helpful if you get stuck and need a helping hand.
Before we end this blog, we wanted to give a shout out to the Roblox product development team who have been very helpful to our crew here at CodaKid. CodaKid was proud to release our first online Roblox Lua coding course in 2017, and we are most appreciative of the helpful advice they gave us along the way.
